Group Car Exercise Descriptions
Timed Autocross Competition
The autocross is a mini road course set up on an asphalt pad with white lines and cones. Competitors negotiate this course by practicing good braking and car control. A lap takes about a minute to complete and will be timed by our instructor staff. After a run, the guest will get their time and have an opportunity to go again to better the result. At the end of the day, the best time wins.
Autocross Exercise
Same as the timed competition but individuals are not competing with each other. They still get their times from an instructor, along with immediate feedback on their run. Guests then use these driving tips, working to improve their personal best. It is a timed event that encourages aggressive, but smooth driving techniques. Students soon learn the handling limits of their automobiles in a controlled setting.
Lead & Follow on 1.6-mile, 15-turn Road Course
Everyone has an opportunity to drive on a real racetrack. A Bondurant instructor will lead the group. Each person drives his or her own car at his or her own comfort level. As the confidence of the drivers builds, the instructor allows the speeds to build. The student will learn how to drive the “line” of the track, and will also learn about proper braking points and cornering techniques. There is only one best way around the famed Bondurant road course!
Accident Avoidance Exercise
Bondurant teaches group students real world skills that have real world applications. Our accident simulator is a state of the art piece of equipment. This device allows an instructor to change traffic lights as drivers are entering an area where they will have to make split-second decisions for lane changes and braking.
As the student approaches the simulator at a constant speed, the three traffic signals above three lanes outlined by cones change to a combination of red and green lights. This change happens about 80 feet from the first cones that define the lanes. The student must then maneuver the vehicle into the open (green) lane. (Max. speed - 40 mph)
Skid Control in Bondurant Skid Cars
The Bondurant Method of car control is best demonstrated and taught in specialized vehicles. Our Skid Cars* have special devices that simulate skidding in a very controlled environment. Instructors actually have the ability to change the degree of the skid from inside these special cars. It’s a wild ride that will teach your guests a lot about car control.
*Skid Car - A car with a sub-frame underneath a modified Bondurant car with outboard wheels, which can be hydraulically controlled to lift either the front or rear wheels to simulate a skid. The skid car can duplicate rain, snow, ice, and complete loss of traction conditions. (Max. speed - 25 mph)
Team Slalom
Slalom driving, like skiing is set up as a series of gates, or in this case, cones. Drivers negotiate cones as best they can and learn some principals of weight transfer, information input and car control. This fun easy exercise is a great way to sharpen skills and allow teams to compete for best time. Teams must buckle in, drive through the slalom course and return, then buckle in the next student. Time is stopped once all students have completed the course. A great team building exercise that’s both challenging and fun for all.
Hot Laps
Buckle up and hold on for the ride of your life! Your group will meet at Pit Lane, strap on helmets and climb into a specially prepared high performance vehicle. An experienced professional instructor will do the driving as your guest gets to experience the 1.6-mile road course they way real race drivers do…at speed! A lot of Bondurant corporate guests prefer to leave the driving to the instructors so they can go faster than they would dare drive themselves!
Handling Oval
The handling oval is designed to teach the student all of the basics of cornering techniques including the proper line through a corner and the best use of the accelerator, brakes and steering. It also tests the students' concentration, trail braking, smoothness, consistency, car feel and the ability to look and think ahead.
